colAR Mix 9/11/13

my drawingPuteko, a New Zealand based company has an app that will bring your children’s artwork to life. They have three, free coloring pages that you can print and color. Hold your mobile device over the page and access your camera through the colAR Mix app. You will see your colored creation through augmented reality come to life right before your eyes. The app is free for iOS or Android but to unlock more coloring pages it’ll cost you $2.99. Note: the app doesn’t work on iPod & iPhone 3 and requires iOS 4.3 or Android 2.2 and up.

To get started visit their website to print out one of the three free pages. I recommend the ‘Dot Day’ page because you can draw anything you want. Next, download the app. Click ‘play’ and position your device over the entire page. As soon as it detects your drawing you will see it animated ‘hovering’ over the page. There are features where you can zoom in and out, play & pause the animation. Change your perspective to see your animation from any angle. Music accompanies each drawing and you can mute that if you like.

One of the three free coloring pages is a template for “International Dot Day” which is September 15th. . Don’t worry if you miss the date, you can still use the coloring page to augment your students drawings with, or without, reading “The Dot”. If you are interested in “The Dot”, it’s a story about a caring teacher who dares a doubting student to trust in her own abilities to be brave enough to “make her mark”. Check out Peter H. Reynolds, author of “The Dot”, and his augmented drawing using the ColAR Mix app.  I also like the dot page because you can change how you view your drawing. You’ll have to get the app and try it out to see the variety of views they offer for your page.
