Overview

 In this lesson you will learn about what a Javelina is. You will learn about the climate, landforms and animals of the desert. You will compare this story to the story of the three little pigs and decide which setting you would rather be in if an enemy was chasing you. 
 
 

Introduction

 You have probably read the story of the three little pigs. Have you ever wondered what might have happened to the three little pigs if they lived at the North Pole or in the rainforests? What if they lived in the desert? You are about to find out.
 
 

Task

  • Your job is to read the story of "The Three Little Javelinas". 
  • Find out what a Javelina is.
  • Learn about what life is like for them in the desert. 
  • Find out how their story is the same or different from our famous three little pigs.
  • Decide which setting you would rather be in.
Process

1) Read the story of "The Three Little Javelinas" with your partner.

2) Click on the picture of the Javelina below to find out more about what a Javelina is.

A special note before you begin - A peccary is another name for a Javelina.






               Answer the following questions:

                                       1) Where do they live? 
                              2) What do they eat? 
                              3) What are two sounds they make to warn the herd about danger?






3) Click on the picture of the Coyote below to find out more about the predators of the peccaries.

  • List three of the peccary's predators.
  • Select two of the peccary's predators.                                                                            <Click on the name of one of the predators to get more information about that enemy. Tell why they are good hunters.





4) Find out more about the desert by clicking on the picture of the cactus below. 

Answer the following question:
 

  •  What is the climate of the desert? 
  • Find out the amount of rain in a year and the temperature.
  • List three landforms you may find in the desert. 






5) Read the story of the Three Little Pigs with your partner. Make a  Venn diagram to show how the two stories are the same and how they are different. You need to have at least three items listed in each section.
 

6) Decide without your partner which setting you would rather be in if your enemy was chasing you. Write you answer in a complete sentence on your information page. 
 

  •   Would you rather be in the desert or in the woods?  Explain why.


7) Get together with your partner and discuss your answers to question number 6.

Conclusion
